Peat is a deposit material composed of plant remains that have sunk and become waterlogged, which cannot fully decompose due to the acidity of the surrounding environment; it may also include remains of insects and other animals.
Peat-based potting soil is characterized by a high presence of organic substances but a low amount of nitrogen, making it particularly suitable for growing acid-loving plants and young plants, facilitating germination and development.
Peat is particularly light and acidic. It makes the substrate porous and permeable thanks to its good water retention capacity; for this reason, peat-based soil improves soil structure by lightening it and making it softer. It is usually reddish-brown in color and has the characteristics of a coarse soil.
